The Federal Trade Commission is charged with preventing deception and unfairness in the marketplace. The FTC Act gives the Commission the power to bring law enforcement actions against false or misleading claims that a product is of U.S. Origin. The Commission has required that a product advertised as Made in the USA be “all or almost all” made in the U.S.
U.S. content must be disclosed on automobiles and textile, wool, and fur products. There’s no law that requires most other products sold in the U.S. to be marked or labeled Made in the USA or have any other disclosure about their amount of U.S. content.
Given a choice between a product made in the U.S. and an identical one made abroad, 78 percent of Americans would rather buy the American product, according to a new nationally representative survey by the Consumer Reports National Research Center. Most Americans want to know where products are made and want to buy those that will help create or keep jobs in the U.S.
